The use of self-disclosure to build rapport with mock covert human intelligence sources (CHIS)

The use of covert human intelligence sources for the protection national security is an important but under-researched area. In light increased globalisation, and technological developments, examining gathering online may have operational relevance. This study examined similarities in self-disclosure to develop rapport with mock online. A sample 66 participants were asked assume role a CHIS, listen audio recording meeting criminal network they are part of, strike balance between being forthcoming their handler while at same time not revealing all information possessed. They then interviewed by who opened conversation one three ways: self-disclosing that highlighted herself dissimilarities, or control (no disclosure). Participants completed follow-up questionnaire based on interaction handler. found rated higher condition comparison other conditions; however, it did translate into significant difference reported. findings this research its policy practice implications discussed.
